Dominic Thiem is probably one of the strongest tennis players and he has been one to watch over the past few tournaments.
Dominic Thiem has had several encounters with world number 1 Rafael Nadal. Also known as the “dominator” the Austrian confessed that he feared to face Rafa in the Monte Carlo quarterfinals. In their previous encounters, both men have shown their zeal and skill on the courts.
Thiem had a memorable time in Barcelona in 2017 after beating Andy Murray in the semifinals. He faced Nadal in the finals. This was one of the most memorable games that showed the true skillfulness and endurance of the Austrian. Nadal ended with the win but it was a win for the Austrian too as he had put up quite a show.
In spring clay season, both men met again at the Madrid final. Nadal beat him again but when they met once more in Rome for the quarterfinals, Thiem was finally able to get his revenge.
They crossed paths again in Roland Garros; this time at the semifinals and Nadal reclaimed the victory again.
The Nadal- Thiem encounters have been unforgettable classics. This is especially on the clay courts which happen to be strongholds for the two players.
We will certainly be looking forward to this year’s playoffs at the Barcelona Open between the two men. He did knock off world number one Andy Murray in Barcelona. He might just pull a surprise stunt on Rafa at this tournament as well.
This is especially so after Novak Djokovic was kicked off the tournament by Martin Klizan leaving us with another surprise.
We will be looking out for Thiem to see if he’s got a surprise under his sleeve for the unbeatable Spaniard. Maybe he’ll use the underarm serve as Briggs advised, or maybe he just has a better tactic. All we can do is wait and watch.
