Danielle Collins enjoys her first victory against a top ten player, and seven-time Grand Slam winner Venus Williams. The Miami Open quarter-final was a historic day for 24-year-old Collins as she came through 6-26-3 against 37-year-old Williams.

Collins was hopeful form the very first ball as she took advantage of the eighth seed’s unforced errors with a lead of 3-0. Williams did try to get on board at 3-1 behind crosscourt winners off both wings; she, however, could not keep up with Collin’s pace.  Williams was able to stave off two set points in the game thanks to her powerful forehands and serves, Collins, however, had an incredible defensive lob which gave her the break and opening frame and ended up with 57% of points on William’s second serve and broke the superstar twice.

At an interview after the match, Collins admitted that she was almost moved to tears the first time she saw Williams in a locker room as she has always been a fan and now playing against her was a dream come true.  She also informed the press of the overwhelming respect she has for Williams and said she had to focus on the game and use all the tactics given by her coaches and ignore who she was playing up against and that is what led to her win.  In her own words, Collins had this to say, “I have put in the hard work my whole life, so at the end of the day, I know I have done literally everything I can do to put myself in the best situation; and if I win the match, I win the match and it’s awesome. If I lose the match, I lose the match knowing that I did everything in my power to put myself in the best situation.”

Collins is set to face Jelena Ostapenko; the French Open Champion at the semi-finals who beat world’s number four Elina Svitolina over two-tie-breaks winning 7-6(7-3) 7-6(7-5). Currently, Collins is ranked at position 93 worldwide. Collins also added in her interview that she was looking forward to playing with Ostapenko on a more grown-up level. She has previously faced Ostapenko on a junior match in 2011. She is looking forward to playing a professional match with her. Collins termed Ostapenko as a fighter and said she is looking forward to the match as it’s another incredible opportunity for her.
